Cardamine lyrata: The Graceful Beauty
By Robert Paul H
This Asian beauty also known as Japanese Cress is a wonderful
addition to any aquarium with sufficient lighting. It is said to
prefer colder temperatures, but I have found it to do very well in warm water. Its
pale green leaves and wispy stems create a nice contrast against dark red stem
plants, such as Scarlet Hygro, or earth tone Cryptocorynes. The native range of
this plant is Eastern China, Korea, and Japan.
With bright enough light, (three watts per gallon of water),
this delicate looking plant is actually quite undemanding, and easily propagated
by cutting the stems. The leaves vary somewhat in structure depending on
conditions...from almost circular to kidney shaped.
