I have a 29 gallon biocube tank … I have the fluval flora substrate in the tank… Been trying to keep plants in there but everything just melts away… And my fish r dropping like crazy too… I use flourish excel and trace… Also potassium and nitrogen …

Ammonia is 0 nitrates r 20 nitrites 0 and pH is about 5.8 to 6.2 …
Been in the fish hobby for over 15 yrs never had a problem like this… Is there anything u suggest I should do … The filtration in that tank I feel is horrible … Since it is built in in

When people have a problem growing plants, the first thing to consider is light, and the most common problem is that people are using lights that are far too inadequate to grow plants. For the best success, one should have between 2 and three watts of fluorescent light per gallon of water. The Oceanic 29 gallon Biocube comes with one 36 watt 10,000 kelvin power compact flourescent and one 36 watt Actinic power compact fluorescent. Although the color of the actinic has no value for freshwater plants, the intensity of both bulbs should be plenty bright enough to grow plants, as long as you run them for 10 to 12 hours every day.

The filtration system of this aquarium is actually very good and very effective. It contains bio balls, sponge media, and mechanical filtration pads- giving a large surface area for biological filtration. At 243 gallons per hour, the circulation pump is plenty strong, perhaps too strong!

So, I do not see anything in your set up that would account for you having problems with either plants or fish. Something else must be going on that you have not accounted for. Plants sometimes just require a bit of patience for them to get started. Make sure you are leaving the lights on long enough each day. Flourish Excel may cause some delicate plants with very thin stems to melt. Your nitrate level is rather high. If your plants are not growing, they are not using the nitrate, and apparently you do not have a bacteria colony keeping it in check. I would suggest seeding your filter with a live bacteria culture such as DrTims One and Only

Pygmy Corydoras are very peaceful fish that are best kept in groups and would be a nice addition to your tank. Loaches eat snails, and may eat your shrimp! In fact if your snail are large, they may go after the shrimp first

Nithin Krishnan wrote in with the following question: “ I have these plants….pigmy amazon, glossostigma, dwarf sagitaria, anubias, java fern- narrow leaf, windelov, red ammannia, purple mint, green cabomba, star grass/bambo plant, compacta, giant ambulia, yellow ludwigia, aroma plant, parrot feather, potamogeton, red lilly, leopard lilly, long grass. I’m planning to remove giant ambulia and red ammania. Please let me know some other plants for the background”

Well Nithin, some of the common names you are using I am not familiar with, but any of your stem plant species will grow as tall as you allow them to. There are many plants that grow tall enough and large enough for the background to choose from. It really depends on what you like. If you want plants that require little maintenance that you do not need to prune and replant- just basically let them grow and forget about them- any of the Sword plants and bulb plants such as Aponogetons and Crinums are good choices. If your aquarium is not large enough for those plants, plants such as Giant hairgrass, or Isoetes both have very narrow leaves that grow straight up without taking up a large amount of space .

Giant hairgrass, (Eleocharis montevidensis).
